Open access drug development tools feature in new IMI Call for proposals
New open access tools for drug development, obesity, and the environmental impacts of medicines are the focus of a new IMI2 Call for proposals launched today. The total budget of the Call is over EUR 80 million. Half of this comes from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme and will fund the participation in the projects of universities, small and medium-sized companies, patient groups etc.

A new Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Accelerator Programme is part of new Calls for proposals launched today by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). Of the other topics launched in the Calls, many address brain disorders (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, major depression) and immune-mediated diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and lupus as well as inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's and colitis, and skin diseases like dermatitis and psoriasis).

Cancer, neurodegenerative disease and medicines safety feature in new IMI Call for proposals
The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is launching a new Call for proposals covering diabetes, antimicrobial resistance, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and medicines safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, to name just a few. The total budget of the Call is EUR 223 million, around half of which comes from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme, and half of which comes from EFPIA companies and IMI Associated Partners.

Autism, diabetes, cancer and pain are among the topics for the €348 million 10th Call for proposals launched under the IMI2 programme. Other topics in the Call focus on: the creation of a European network for clinical trials in children; the biomanufacture of certain medicines; the need to include the patient perspective in medicines development; and the role of certain genes in disease.

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) has launched its 5th Call for proposals under the IMI 2 programme. IMI 2 - Call 5 has a total budget of €95 million and features 6 topics. Of these, four focus on different aspects of Alzheimer's disease, one focuses on diabetic kidney disease, and one addresses patient input on assessments of the benefits and risks of medicines. Four topics focus on Alzheimer's disease, an area where there is an urgent need for new treatments.

IMI launches €115 million Calls for proposals to develop vaccines & medicines of the future
The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are to collaborate on a project to improve vaccines against whooping cough. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is an infectious disease caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium and characterised by severe coughing fits. Worldwide, there are around 16 million cases and 195 000 deaths from pertussis in children every year. Vaccines against pertussis do exist, but a resurgence in the number of cases in certain countries is cause for concern. This new project will make it possible to refine current vaccination schedules to make them more effective, and facilitate the development of new and improved vaccine formulations.
