First DataBank partners with unique medication management provider
Protomed, the world's first provider of a total medication management platform catering for both liquid and solid medications, has signed an agreement with drug knowledge base and clinical decision support provider First DataBank (FDB). Protomed and FDB have signed a contract in which FDB will provide its Multilex Drug Data File (Multilex DDF) to enable safer and easier identification of medications within Protomed’s Biodose™ Total Medication Management System (ToMM®).

British Innovation Shines at the iawards
The iawards ceremony at the Science Museum saw the teams behind this year's best British innovations. Topping the honours list was Horizon Discovery Ltd, a technology start-up company which scooped the iaward of the Year for its hi-tech, 'X-MAN Model Cancer Patient'; a product that identifies patients most likely to respond to particular cancer treatments.

Researchers follow spread of HIV between cells
A team of German researchers has successfully tracked a key protein in the HIV (human immuno-deficiency virus) intercellular infection and virus assembly process in real time. Their partly EU-funded research now published in the open-access journal Public Library of Science (PLoS) Pathogens has improved our understanding of the Gag (group-specific antigen) protein's infectious route from cell to cell, and might lead to new treatments.

Parliament urges joint EU action on neurodegenerative diseases
The European Parliament (EP) on 12 November adopted a resolution supporting the pan-European coordination of research on neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The ultimate goal is to combine funding, skills and knowledge, and to capitalise on the efforts being carried out across the EU.

Progress on alternative approaches to animal testing
The European Partnership on Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) was launched in November 2005 by European Commission Vice President Günter Verheugen and Science & Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik together with the European industry. At a conference in Brussels both industry and the Commission have expressed their strong wish to strengthen this unprecedented collaboration to reduce animal testing as much as possible to avoid unnecessary suffering for animals (the 3Rs Approach) wherever possible.

International Diabetes Federation drives global action ahead of World Diabetes Day
In many countries, November is diabetes awareness month, with November 14 - World Diabetes Day - the most significant date on the diabetes calendar. Oncodesign(R) to Develop Experimental Cancer Models for sanofi-aventis
Oncodesign, a specialist in the identification of novel cancer therapies, has signed a two-year service contract with sanofi-aventis under which it is to supply and develop exclusive, experimental models in different types of cancer for the Paris-based pharmaceutical company. Unlike traditional models, which are derived from cultured cell lines, the models that Oncodesign is developing are based on the use of tumor tissue taken directly from patients, enabling more customized evaluations to be made of new therapies while remaining as close as possible to clinical reality. The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
